Gibb's Farm
> Karatu
Located on the outer slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater lies Gibb’s Farm. Founded in the 1920s as a coffee plantation, we embrace traditional East African hospitality with our roots extending deep into the land and our heritage here.
OVERVIEW:
Seventeen refurbished one-bedroom cottages, twin queen beds or king-sized, are perfectly located around the farm. Each offers a private terrace, living area, en-suite bathroom, garden or valley view and outdoor shower to create a personal, richly appointed space to soak up the sense of welcome and rhythms of the farm. An idyllic retreat while exploring the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara national parks and Lake Eyasi, on safari in Tanzania. Recline with a cup of freshly roasted coffee overlooking the Great Rift Valley in lush surroundings. THE LODGE/CAMP:
The smart, up-country farmhouse is the farm's hub and is full of the charm of East Africa with its pretty stone walls and beamed ceilings. The living rooms have huge armchairs and beautiful old coffee tables, and there are plenty of cosy nooks and crannies to curl up in with a book, wildly when the log fire is roaring. The dining area is a split-level room with enormous wraparound windows and panoramic views out the emerald hills beyond.
ROOMS:
The stone pathways winding through blooms of lilies and bougainvillaea lead to 20 pretty stone cottages, 18 of which have just been refurbished. Each room is decorated to reflect an area of the plantation’s rich history. Still, all are light and airy with two queen-size beds, open fires for chilly evenings and beautiful flower-filled balconies overlooking the farm. Sharing the same views are the vast stone bathtubs in the bathrooms, just made for soaking in after a long day exploring.
QUICK INSIGHTS:
Gibbs's Farm is (and always will be!) one our favourite lodges in Ngorongoro and there's still a surprise to be enjoyed, from the resident artist painting at breakfast to the exquisite, well-thought-out food.
