What Is the New Mandatory Travel Insurance for Tanzania?
The Tanzanian government has introduced the Inbound Travel Insurance Regulations 2026 (Government Notice No. 256). Foreign visitors arriving in Mainland Tanzania by air, land or sea must now purchase official travel insurance issued by the National Insurance Corporation (NIC) or its approved partners.
The policy costs the equivalent of USD 44 Per Person (payable in Tanzanian shillings) and is valid for a maximum of 92 days from the date of arrival. It allows multiple entries into Mainland Tanzania during that period. Visitors staying longer must buy a new policy.
Important: This is completely separate from the Zanzibar mandatory insurance (run by the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation). If your itinerary includes both the mainland (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Kilimanjaro) and Zanzibar, you will need both policies.
Who Needs to Buy It?
All foreign visitors entering Mainland Tanzania (except exempt nationalities/residents).
Applies whether you already have your own international travel insurance or not — the local policy is compulsory.
Exemptions: Residents of East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) member states are not required to purchase this insurance.
