From the iconic Masai Mara to the flamingo-filled shores of Lake Nakuru, Kenya’s safari destinations offer a diverse range of lodges, camps, and conservancies.

At Trip Quest, we collaborate with over 400 accommodations in Kenya and choosing the right one can be overwhelming. To make your decision easier, we have categorised the accommodations into six classes ranging from Economy (Class 1) to Ultra-Luxury (Class 6) based on various factors such as location, facilities, reviews, food quality, interior designs, services, and special offers. In this ultimate guide, we will walk you through each accommodation class, highlighting their unique features and helping you find the perfect place to stay during your Kenyan safari.

Popular Destinations & Accommodation Dynamics

Masai Mara

The most complex in terms of accommodation, the Mara comprises the main reserve and numerous private and community-run conservancies (e.g., Olare Motorogi, Naboisho). Lodging location determines not just budget but access to exclusive guide activities like night drives or bush walks—often only offered in conservancies. Staying inside the reserve ensures classic wildlife but high season crowds, while conservancies bring privacy and flexibility.

Lake Nakuru

Famous for lakeside game viewing, especially flamingos and rhinos. Most mid- and high-end properties are located inside the national park for optimal wildlife access; budget and some mid-range options are found just outside the gates for greater value.

Amboseli, Samburu, Tsavo, Laikipia

Amboseli - iconic views of Kilimanjaro, with mid- to luxury camps inside and around the park.

Samburu & Laikipia - rich in conservancy properties, giving unique exclusivity and often supporting community conservation.

Tsavo - offers remote wilderness, with both affordable lodges and exclusive luxury bush properties.
